  1. What was your experience like searching for and securing an internship/part-time/full-time job/community involvement during the pandemic?
    • I am currently pursuing higher education. My institution has been working diligently throughout the pandemic to ensure that students are satisfied with their clinical placements and externships. I have previously interned at NYU Langone Rusk Rehabilitation as a Speech Intern in New York, NY and a Speech Pathologist Student at Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center in Buffalo, NY.
  2. Share any accomplishments, successes, positive experiences during your experience.
    • In January 2019, I traveled to Accra, Ghana to conducted research focused on speech-language pathology services for children. I presented my research at the Collegiate Science Technology Entry Program 25th Annual Conference and won first place. During the year of 2019-2020 I was invited to multiple conferences to share my research. I founded the National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing at Buffalo State College. I wanted students like me to have a greater sense of belonging in a field of study that is important, invigorating, and employable. I served as an academic tutor for the Center for Excellence in Rural Education. I have participated in civic engagement projects in the Buffalo community for Buffalo Hearing and Speech, Buffalo Liberty Partnerships, and NYGEAR UP College Access Program. I was a Student Office Assistant for the Residence Life Office, Student Ambassador for the Equity and Diversity and Admission Office. Humbly, I was honored to receive the 2020 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.
  3. In what ways did the Career and Professional Education Center (CAPE) help in your preparation/search? (workshops, event, 1-on-1 services, BengalLink/other resources)
    • I was in the CAPE office at least twice a week. Cate helped me with seeking internships, writing personal statements, applying graduate school applications/ interviews, editing my resume, and picking out professional clothing at the Annual Suit-Up Event. I was more than grateful for the CAPE’s open-door policy. The staff always supported my future aspirations and displayed as a support system when I was uncertain about my future. I invited all my friends to take advantage of the CAPE resources. I would recommend the CAPE as they are very hands-on with their students and Alumni. The staff always have the student's best interest at heart. They help mold BSC students into confident professionals. The CAPE initiates mock interviews, resume drop-in, and Career Day to help students prepare for prospective jobs, internships, and graduate school.
  4. Words of wisdom you would like to share with other students?
    • “Throughout your journey, be authentic to yourself and always ask for help. A close mouth will not get fed. Don’t wait for an opportunity. Create it.”
  5. Desired career plans after graduation?
    • I am currently enrolled at Emory University. I am receiving my Masters in Nursing. My long-term goal is to become a Pediatrician or a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.
  6. Would you like to include your email address to be featured on our website? (for future outreach and connections with other students and employers)
